February Consumer Spending Report
A Slight Uptick Despite the Weather – But Expectations and Confidence Drop

Despite the severe weather across much of the U.S., ChangeWave's February survey shows a slight uptick in consumer spending for the month. While the results aren’t as strong as the surges in our previous two February surveys, they highlight the continuing resilience of the U.S. economy. ChangeWave Research is a service of 451 Research.

That said, the survey of 2,107 U.S. consumers – completed February 14 – is also showing a sharp downturn in consumer expectations and confidence. The severe cold and snowstorms that have paralyzed some sections of the country for long stretches of time appear largely to blame for the shaken consumer outlook this month.

With the exception of an uptick in travel/vacation spending, there are few signs of momentum within individual categories. And as consumers cope with the wintry weather, rising concerns about higher energy costs are having an impact – leading to reduced spending on restaurants, entertainment, and retail store shopping. Despite this, the fact that we’re seeing a slight spending uptick this month is an encouraging sign for the U.S. consumer economy moving forward.
